This original and informative unit will provide the foundation of key board injury knowledge and burn management principles from which to facilitate best practice in burn care for people who work in burns services nationally and internationally.

It is a single unit with curriculum covering both paediatric and adult aspects of burn injury care.

It is open to all members of the burn care team as well as other health care professionals who have regular contact with burn patients.

Unit Content

The curriculum covers all aspects of both paediatric and adult acute burn injury management, specifically:

• Burn aetiology
• Calculation of depth and TBSA
• Management of acute and procedural pain
• Management of chemical and electrical burn injuries
• Surgical intervention procedures and early excision
• Psychological difficulties experienced by burn patients and practical solutions
• Wound healing and appropriate dressing selection
• Physiotherapy/occupational therapy and early rehab measures for the burned patient

Where and When?

The unit runs for a total of seven full day sessions, each on a Friday, generally commencing in September with the last session being in December each year. A list of dates will be available on submission of Expression of Interest for that year.

Academic Study

This is an online module which will include participating in an interactive programme of study combining e-learning, on-line taught lessons, self-directed study, debates, discussion, placement/practice learning and completing summative assessments

What Qualifications/Entry Requirements do I need?

• Level 6 Study: A minimum of DipHE in a health-related subject (Level 5)
• Level 7 Study: A minimum of a degree in a health-related subject (Level 6)

The course is open to professionals who have regular exposure to burn injuries and the ability to reflect on the management of burns; applicants must have a minimum of three months experience working in a dedicated burn environment

How much will it cost?

If you are already working in burns within the Northern Burn Network the course is free. If you would like to apply and work within the Northern Burn Care Network, you should request an expression of interest form from manchesterburnscourse@mft.nhs.uk

Applicants from outside the Northern Burn Care Network Burns Unit should apply direct to the University of Manchester via their website

What qualification will I get?

Academic study affords 20 credits for level 6 and 15 credits for level 7
